Keith From Kutztown
A Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission historical marker honoring Kutztown native and internationally known artist Keith Haring was dedicated on the grounds of the Kutztown Area Historical Society on Friday, 11 October 2024. Keith was raised in the same neighborhood as the society’s 1892 Public School Building, attending classes in its rooms when he was in 4th, 7th, 8th, and 9th grades. Even at the height of his fame, Keith introduced himself as “Keith from Kutztown.”
Keith participated in the society’s 1982 Christmas Tea and Art Show (28 November 1982). At that time, he drew on the chalkboards to draw attention to the work he was selling. After the show, he gave permission to the society to preserve and keep his artwork. During the show, Keith sold $300 of his art. His commission to the society was $30, and he donated another $30. Of the 13 artists participating in the show, Keith had the highest revenue. These chalk drawings are on permanent display at the society. One of Keith’s sculptures is prominently displayed in the Kutztown Park, where it is often visited by fans near and far.
Keith’s life and legacy has been well documented, most recently in a detailed biography “Radiant: The Life and Line of Keith Haring“ by Brad Gooch. The Kutztown Area Historical Society was one of Mr. Gooch’s sources for his book’s content.
While Keith remains an inspirational figure to millions across the world, he will always be known in his hometown as “Keith From Kutztown.”
